This High Impact Programme is developed around real issues facing the industry. We are looking to catapult 12 tourism operators into a position where they are better equipped to operate a profitable and financially sustainable business. Made up of four workshops and one-on-one follow up coaching sessions, the programme will cover the following key business development areas:
Day 1 – Business Planning and Implementation (9am - 4.30pm)
A successful business in the tourism sector requires a lot of thought; from brand positioning and staff training to dealing with seasonal trends and internet marketing. One of the most common causes of business failure is the inability to implement and accurately measure the business plan. In the dynamic tourism industry you are implementing your strategy daily and the success of your business depends on your skill with this.
- How does your business plan deal with the challenges of the economic crisis in our main tourism markets? Now and for the next 2 years?
- Who in your business will implement the strategies you are developing?
- How can you increase staff retention and reduce the impact of seasonality of your business?
- Why is today’s market ideal for increasing your marketing spend?
- What has Air New Zealand done to reduce it’s Carbon foot print, and what are you doing now?

Day 2 – Marketing Strategy from an Industry Perspective (9am - 4.30pm)
This session will give participants the opportunity to hear directly from industry peers who have been there and done that. Each speaker will share an area of their marketing strategy giving insights into what worked and what could have been done better. WHK have secured the engagement of Jon Doherty - Director of Sales & Marketing of Canterbury's Terrace Downs Resort, Darryl Soljan of Ascenion Vineyards, Nicola Smith - tourism sustainability guru and Bruce Richardson - CFO of Kea Campers.

Day 3 – Web & Email Marketing and Customer Relationships (9am - 4.30pm)
- Gaining new customers via the online channels and maintaining them
- Online marketing and online strategy is key to your business success: But how do you rank in Google, are you on the first page? We look at key search engine optimization techniques
- Online statistics – how is your website measuring up? Number of visitors, enquires and bounces?
- Social networking – Your customers can do the promotion for you. They are blogging about you, posting images and videos about you. Are you making the most of these opportunities?
- Email marketing and managing customer relationships long after they have left to go home.
Day 4 – Capitalising on Market Opportunities (9am - 4.30pm)
How do you conduct effective market research to discover a credible opportunity? How do you construct a presentation and pitch that will succeed, and generate sales? What are the positive steps you can take in a slowing economy to increase business?
- 23 million visitors will attend the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, should you be there?
- 2011 the Rugby world cup in New Zealand, what are you doing to make the most of this event?
- In 2013 1.1 million tourists will come from Australia annually, do they know you exist?
- 144% increase in Chinese tourists will occur from 2006 to 2013 - what is your plan to take advantage of this?
- How will you sell to inbound tourist operators, your website, in person?
- Which international travel shows do you need to visit to build awareness of your offering?
- What part of the sales process are your strengths or weakness?
